2007 MSA British Karting Championships - Shenington

The fourth round of the MSA British Karting Championships was held at Shenington on July 8th for Formula A, ICA, JICA and Cadets.

The weekend started badly for cadets with a very strange defect on the designated tyres. Apparantly they were not manufactured with sufficient tread depth. With reports that tyres were showing their canvas after thirty laps it was decided drivers would use their own tyres for race day.

In Formula A, the deciding factor wasn't just pace, it was whether or not you could keep your motor from seizing into the infamous Wilkins approach. Motors were popping all over the show throughout the weekend and would therfore decide the results of the final

JICA Final 1

After a clean sheet of heat wins for Mclarens new signing, Oliver Rowland was on pole, and the red hot favourite to take the JICA win. It could not have gone any better for him. Getting a clean start from Rikki Gordon, who placed 2nd on the grid, it was pretty much all over from the start. Rowland powered to a 3 second gap in as many laps and was driving supremely.

The real battle was for second. Gordon had dropped back several places at the start, and Tom Patterson moved into second place. Tom Grice was soon into 3rd ahead of Tom Joyner. All 3 on Gillards - it was an enthralling battle for 2nd. Tom Grice grabbed the early initiative and stormed into second place. By now Rowland was way ahead, and looked to be in tyre conservation mode, knowing he had another final that day. So relaxed was Rowland, he even carbed the engine through the fast Turn 1.

JICA Final 2

Oliver Rowland started the restarted 2nd final with confidence and held first place from Tom Grice, and Gary Thompson who slotted into 3rd. Rowland pulled a gap on Grice, but Grice managed to tag Rowland for a couple of laps until a slip up at the chicane lost him very valuable tenths. Rowland capitalised on this and pulled out a decent lead.

The race stayed settled from there and the first 4 places remained the same for the rest of the race. Rowland completed a superb double victory and now takes 6 wins from 8 in this years British Junior Karting Championship. He looked more than happy when he crossed the line!

ICA Final 1

Two drivers dominated the ICA Final 1 - Eliot Burton, and Robert Foster -Jones. Foster-Jones got the jump on Burton at the beginning of Final 1, with Laura Tillet slotting into 3rd place. However Burton soon started to reel in Foster-Jones, and managed to pass him and pull a small gap before Foster Jones started to fight back. With 3 laps to go Foster-Jones squeezed past Burton for the lead at the hairpin. Tillet, who fell to 4th place fought back to 3rd. However she was given a warning flag in the process.

With 2 laps to go, Burton sneaked past Foster-Jones into Wilkins and was forced to defend for the final lap. Burton nearly lost his position with a mistake coming out of the chicane but held on to take the win from Foster-Jones. Tillet, who looked good for 3rd stuck her motor on the last lap, and Jason Edgar inherited 3rd place.

ICA Final 2

Eliot Burton got a great start from pole position. Jason Edgar followed Burton and got into second place from Robert Foster-Jones. Foster-Jones saw Burton rapidly extending his lead and quickly cruised past Edgar, who fell to 4th after running wide. Foster-Jones looked to have the pace over Burton and soon caught him. It seemed Burton had set up his kart to come on late, and after a few laps his kart suddenly started to look settled. He then extended his lead over Foster-Jones

Cadet Final.

James Appleten and Brett Wykes lead the front row as the Cadets started their final. Several laps in Appleton led Wykes, from Haz Truelove. However, Appleten lost momentum, and dropped to 4th place, and Truelove powered into first place. However with 4 laps to go Jake Dennis, the O Plate, led the Cadets with Haz Trulove in second. Truelove managed to pass Dennis and regain the lead. The final lap came and Truelove defended hard from Dennis, but Dennis managed to find a way through to take the win from Truelove, with Wykes in 3rd.

Formula A Final 1

Lee Bell, and Chris Rogers started on the front row for the first Formula A final. Reigning champion Mark Litchfield was stuck in the mid-field after some disappointing heats. Rogers took the lead at the start. Jonathon Walker quickly took second from Bell and was soon in hot pursuit of Rogers. By lap 2, Walker caught and passed Rogers into Turn 1. Litchfield, by now, was up to 6th place and was looking threatening. He soon deposed Richard Bradley from 4th place. Litchfield then took 3rd, and it was a 3-way battle for the win.

With only a few laps left Rogers had regained the lead, however a mistake in Café corner lost him time, and both Walker, and Litchfield closed up. But Litchfield was the one to benefit most as he grabbed 2nd place from Walker at the hairpin on the following straight.

Suddenly the ‘formation’ flag was shown, presumably to remove some karts that had stuck some motors at the end of the long Hanger Straight. On the restart, Litchfield attacked Rogers. Rogers defended well and kept his place. Walker took his opportunity and grabbed second place from Litchfield, but Litchfield soon regained his position.

With 3 laps to go, Litchfeild grabbed first place, but an aggressive Rogers took it back in the chicane. Last lap, and Rogers defended hard. Litchfield was unable to find a way through and was forced to settle for second place. Walker lost time in pursuit of the leaders and dropped back to 5th. Cruttenden took 4th, and Richard Bradely took 5th.

Formula A Final 2

Both PFi team drivers Mark Litchfield, and Chris Rogers headed the front row. From the start Mark Litchfield aggressively took the lead from Rogers with a demon start. End of lap one, and it was Litchfield from Rogers, with Danny Cruttenden in 3rd. By the end of lap 2 Walker had managed to demote Cruttenden and get into 3rd place.

Mark Litchfield Looked Good For a Win Until His Motor Seized

Meanwhile Litchfield disappeared from the race with a stuck motor, and Rogers took the lead. Lee Bell, and Richard Bradley started to come into the picture fighting for 3rd place. But then a double blow for the PFi team when Roger’s motor seizes down at Wilkins, right where Litchfield seized as well. A lucky Walker suddenly found himself in first, from Bradley, and Cruttenden. Then as if there was a curse on the leaders of this race, Walker found his motor seizing in the same place as Litchfield, and Rogers. Bradley now found himself in first place. He kept his cool and took the win from Cruttenden, and Bell.
