Shocking video demonstrates dangers of roll bar failure on a kart

By Karting1 ~ August 13th, 2012. Filed under: Kart Racing News.

Roll bars and seat belts are often sighted as an instant way to improve kart driver safety in the event of a roll over accident and seem quite fashionable in certain parts of the world. However a video has appeared on Youtube that raises questions over this conventional wisdom. The video demonstrates the frightening consequences of such a device failing and presenting a whole myriad of new dangers faced by a driver. According to the video description the driver escaped serious injury, he was very fortunate. It certainly suggests a raising of safety standards for such devices may need to be required.

I’m not an advocate of roll bars, but the one referenced above is a very poorly designed roll bar. Any one that bends on impact was designed incorrectly. Of course, the argument then is that it will be too heavy or bulky, which may be true.

The arm going through the roll hoop is something that I hadn’t considered before.

I think “shocking” is a little overstated. All that video did was reinforce what I already knew, roll bars have no place in karting. You think karting is too dangerous? Don’t do it.

    Slightly biased headline?

This website is read by many people. Opinions in headline form reek of unprofessionalism. Just because this roll bar failed doesn’t mean that they are dangerous. Lack of homologation of roll bars throughout the sport leads to DIY cages that are often improperly designed or manufactured. If the major manufactures were forced to incorporate such safety features I am of the opinion that well designed durable and crash resistant cages would come to market and one wouldn’t see such failures.

Please try to exhibit more professionalism in publishing one of the most read karting websites in the world by avoiding tabloid style, opinion based headlines.
