CIK Take Action on KF Clutches!
By Karting1 ~ July 28th, 2008. Filed under: Kart Racing News.
The talk of the paddock over the last few months has been the dire clutch situation in KF. The rules state that the KF clutch must engage at 5000rpm and move the kart. However some clever took advantage of a grey area in the refs and have been making clutches that could move the kart from 5000rpm, but yet ’slip’ until around the magical 8000rpm mark. This allows for better performance out of the tight corners. Below 8000rpm a KF has virtually no power, so a sophisticated slipping clutch can bring a real performance advantage.
The cost of this has been extremely high, and clutches breaking on circuit has not been an uncommon sight
The CIK have now taken action and are enforcing a system to improve the situation. However anyone with a keen eye will notice they practically a word for word copy of 2008 KartSport New Zealand Manual page 176. But thankfully it appears those rules seem to work pretty well!!!
The control of the moving of the kart at the set rpm (5,000 maximum) will take place either in the
Assembly Area before Qualifying Practice and Heats and/or races and may be carried out at the
finish of these same Qualifying Practice and Heats and/or races. An oblong strip of metal (12mm
by 75 mm deep by 1,400 mm wide) will be placed on the ground immediately in front of both
front wheels (if the test is carried out in the Assembly Area, tyre pressure shall be the one
scheduled by the Driver for the race, and he will not be allowed to modify it after the test; if
the test is carried out after the finish, no intervention whatsoever will be allowed on the
kart). The engine will be started by the Driver seated at the wheel of his kart. The Scrutineer will
pinch the cable of the rev-meter to the spark plug cable in order to read the number of revolutions.
The Driver must obey the orders given by the Scrutineer.
