CIK Drops Super KF For World Championships!

By Karting1 ~ June 24th, 2010. Filed under: Kart Racing News.

In a rather predictable move the CIK has ditched Super KF as it’s flagship class for the World Karting Championship, and replaced it with KF2.  An on-going row between the big kart manufacturers and the CIK has seen mass boycotting of major events like the European Championship and the World Cup in favour of competing in the WSK series this year! The CIK feared the same would happen to the World Championship which is why they have changed the world most prestigious karting title.

The planned KF2 World Cup ,which was going to be held as a support event to the World Championship at Zeura, has now been promoted to top billing. The CIK released this statement:

2010 CIK-FIA World Karting Championship

Scheduled for 19 September at Zuera (ESP), the 47th edition of the CIK-FIA World Karting Championship will be held with karts of the KF2 category instead of the initially scheduled Super KF karts. The guarantees to have a decent field with the later category are insufficient. More accessible technically and financially, KF2 appears to be the most appropriate alternative. With this category, a more varied participation will be guaranteed (thanks to an extension of the makes and teams involved), and it will be more international and much larger. The CIK-FIA World Cup for KF2, which was to be held within the framework of the same meeting, is in fact transformed into the World Championship. In addition to those Drivers who were eligible for the World Cup for KF2, the World Council has approved the inclusion in the eligibility criteria of Drivers meeting the conditions intially scheduled for entering the 2010 World Super KF Championship. Entries will be open from 12 July to 17 August 2010.

The final of the CIK-FIA World Karting Championship will be broadcast live on Eurosport International.
