Ahmed and Macdonald share MSA Cadet spoils at Ellough.

- Enaam Ahmed takes MSA Cadet points lead with round three win.
- Feisty Scot Macdonald holds on for narrow round four victory.
The 2012 Formula Kart Stars MSA British Cadet Championship headed east to Ellough Park in Suffolk for the third and fourth rounds of the Formula One Management backed Championship where 36 drivers had to deal with Ellough’s highly technical and very abrasive track surface but thankfully not the intermittent rain that plagued the opening two rounds of the season.
Looking to follow in the footsteps of former FKS Cadet Champions and current Formula One drivers Lewis Hamilton and Paul Di Resta, the MSA Cadet contenders were treated to a typically warm welcome from the team at Ellough Park, who provided a free hog roast, live music and plenty of entertainment from professionals at the nearby Skydiving Centre while the team from MINI Challenge outfit Lohen Ltd were on hand throughout the weekend to present the trophies.

The weekend was dominated by two drivers, Enaam Ahmed (Fusion Motorsport) and Dean Macdonald (Shox Performance) who, between them headed both qualifying sessions, won all four heats and both A Finals as the championship picture became slightly clearer even with eight rounds still to go.

Ahmed dominated proceedings in Saturday’s third round, edging Macdonald in timed qualifying an then winning both his heats to carry a perfect points score into the final. Macdonald won the third heat (which didn’t contain Ahmed) following a late pass on erstwhile championship leader Josh Smith (Fusion Motorsport) and lined up alongside Ahmed on the front row of the grid for the final.
However nobody could touch Ahmed in the main event and as Macdonald and Smith battled over second place Ahmed pulled away to win by a comfortable five seconds. Macdonald eventually got the better of Smith to clinch second with Oliver York (Fusion Motorsport) narrowly defeating Ross Martin (Team Wright) for fourth.
Ahmed’s sparkling form continued on Sunday morning when he led timed qualifying again, albeit by just one hundredth of a second over Martin with Macdonald third. However Macdonald took control of the heats, winning both his races with Ahmed taking the third by two seconds over Smith.
For the second consecutive day Alex McRoberts (Independent) won the B Final, thus becoming the only other driver all weekend to win a race but Ahmed’s hopes of a double A Final win were dealt a mortal blow when he dropped to eighth on the first lap as Macdonald converted pole position into an early lead.

Hugo Bentley-Ellis (Forza Motorsport) tagged on to Macdonald’s bumper at the head of the field and the duo pulled clear of the rest but as the race wore on Ahmed and York closed on the leaders and with two laps to go the top four were together. Bentley-Ellis was shuffled back to fourth on the final tour as Ahmed closed to within a kart length of Macdonald at the flag.
Macdonald’s second win of the year elevates him into second place in the points standings, three points behind Ahmed with Smith, who drove up to 15th in the final after falling to 30th on the opening lap, 18 points behind Macdonald in third.
