Both Cooper and Varley are racing for KMS, not Birel Motorsport. The CRG boys are entered at CRG Spa team entrants. This is a factory effort, rather than a 'supported' effort or something similar.

Alan, Birel are entering factory drivers with Cooper and Varley both have been factory KF drivers as recent as last year (Varley at CRG) the factory are behind that effort and out of the team of 5 drivers i think in snr 1 made it to the final! Another factory that were present went home on Saturday they were that bad!! Euro max isn't the hobby racing it used to be 10 years ago

There is a difference between the factories having presence within the paddock and the 'junior' teams because largely those teams are filled with paying customers. They are not factories entering drivers that are currently racing in the elite classes. The equilivent would be TonyKart entering Camponeschi and maybe Karol Basz or Birel entering Kozlinski and Russell.

It's a major team and factory entering Rotax, which is a step above what the other teams have done so far.

Hi Alan,

Although what you have said in terms of the questionability of karting's profitability and sustainability is quite true. I have to disagree about the advantage that CRG are perceived to enjoy this weekend simply due to it being a factory effort. In terms of engines there really isn't an advantage they will enjoy that's for sure, in fact they are likely to have worse engines than teams like strawberry, coles racing, Pdb gillard team as well of most of the other teams and even privateers. Most likely they are just going to rent engines of a builder (yet to be announced). Teams like strawberry operate more or less as factory teams with all the same equipment (dont forget they used to be the official tonykart junior team), Gillard/maddox have been there for years Birel are represented by KMS and have factory technicians at the races. Crg may have allot of chassis experience in other classes but in reality most other teams have the same equipment and it really will just come down to drivers as it always does. In terms of drivers, remember that drivers like charlie eastwood, ben cooper as well as many others are ex kf drivers who can drive just as well as the factory boys. So CRG coming along doesnt mean that the spirit of rotax is really changing. Lennox lamb took part in the florida winter tour and didnt run away with the race he finished on the podium once i think. The reality is this race is only an exercise for CRG to show all the drivers that yes their chassis can win races just as they do in numerous other countries and championships. In europe the tonykart just has a good base setup that works with the tires, the other chassis are just as good but just need VERY SLIGHT adjustment to reach the same level. Bottom line its a very embarrassing situation for the CIK and it should finally hit home that even if you can string together a grid of seventy drivers most of whom are struggling to be there doesn't mean a class is succeeding.

Not all that shocking. Prior to the inception of BRP Inc, the Rotax kart engine division was an even smaller element of the overall business of Bombardier. Annual unit sales for BRP are around 250,000, many of which are far more priceyproducts. The MAX only sells around 5000 a year at best. it's a very small part of their overall business.

Hi,
I just read you piece on historic karting and thought you would be interested in an event to be staged in Australia in March 2014.
The Australian Vintage Kart Prix.
If you can send me an email address I will send all of our bulletins as the event approaches.
We have already received entries from New Zealand and strong interest from Canada and USA.
We would be stoked to have a contingent from the UK!

Hi!
There is a mistake in Your report "CIK:Historic Karting is booming".
Mr.Kai Oberheide is not the president of the Historic Karting Club of Germany.
The president of the German Historic Karting Club "Klassik-Kart Club Deutschland" (KKCD) is Mr.Gernot Stöcker! ;-)

Greetings
