HKRC 2010 Championships Round 5 – 11th July 2010

By Karting1 ~ July 16th, 2010. Filed under: Announcements.

Lap records were at risk on a beautiful Sunday in mid July as Hunts Kart Racing Club’s 2010 Championship reached its 5th round. Kimbolton Circuit 2 was used for the first time this year, the Easton Hairpin and first Bus Stop providing new places for drivers to overtake.

Cadet Libre and Honda Cadet: A coming together on the run to the first corner saw three Libre front runners’ races effectively over, leaving Lewis Taylor with a relatively easy drive for a lights-to-flag win. Not that Taylor was hanging around – in the early stages he set a blistering pace that no one was able to match and a new unofficial circuit 2 class lap record of 52.75 seconds. Jake Blackledge sat behind William Bennett for all but the last cornet, pouncing at Kimbolton to snatch the runner up spot. Kathleen Sore won the Novice trophy. In Honda Dino Lee was pushed hard by Aaron Drury but was able to control the key moments in the race to take the win. Ethan Andrews was third. Stephanie Sore took the Novice trophy.

Junior TKM: Jake Partridge led from pole, but Stephen Letts wasn’t letting him get away and kept the pressure on the leader at every turn. With a new unofficial fastest lap under his belt, Letts bided his time and as the last lap board was shown kept the inside line into Stow Corner to sweep into the lead. Partridge responded with a dive down the inside at Easton Hairpin, but Letts muscled his way back into the lead through the Bus Stop. Bradley Peck was third whilst Matthew Hayes won the Novice trophy.

Mini Max: Luke Hughes led the early laps and established a bit of a gap, but Oliver Skingley was soon on his tail and swiftly into the lead. James Webb kept his kart within slipstreaming distance of Hughes and on several occasions looked like he may make a move for second, but wasn’t able to get the job done.

Junior Rotax: Tom D’Arcy led from pole and never looked like being caught. Josh Collings took up the chase but d’Arcy was always able to maintain a comfortable lead. Bobby Neil looked quick in the early stages, but couldn’t maintain his early pace and had to settle for third. Behind them Liam Ferguson, Alistair Bray and Toby Reynolds entertained with a determined battle for fourth, eventually going Bray’s way. Rino Russo won the Novice trophy.

Rotax 177 and TKM Extreme: Lee Torrie was able to post another lights-to-flag victory, although fellow Gillard driver Gordon Chenery pushed him hard, setting the fastest lap in the process. Torrie was always able to cover any progress Chenery made. Tom Pyttlick drove a lonely race in third. Rob Buchanan won the Novice trophy. In Extreme, Sam Grogan was out of sight of the rest, with Ashley Ruggles similarly a secure second. Michael Cornell dropped out leaving Shaun Abbot and Mark Court to battle for third, Court getting the verdict.

Gearbox 125 and 250: In 125, David Baldwin got the better start from the outside of the front row and led pole sitter Andrew Brunton. Brunton sat in Baldwin’s wheel tracks until the latter stages when he started to challenge for the lead. On the penultimate lap, Baldwin was slow out of Willows and Brunton made a run at him down Yamitsu Straight. Baldwin moved to block this forcing Brunton onto the grass, and heading towards the tyres. Naturally he needed some time to recover to the circuit. This moved Chris Thexton and Mark Culey into second and third respectively. After the race, Baldwin was given a three place penalty, so Thexton was declared the winner from Culey with Brunton third. Nicholas Hope won the Novice trophy. In the 250 class, Jason Tucker led Andrew Dean throughout.

Senior Rotax: Anton Stamps was hot off the line to lead from start to finish. Harry Arnold and Andrew Winter had a ding dong battle for second in the opening laps, but contact at the Bus Stop saw Winter onto the grass. Arnold was given a driver warning and dropped back. Jamie White inherited second but he was soon passed by Alex Rowley and then had to relinquish third to James Corpe.

Rotax 177 Masters: Wayne Smithers made this race his own from the off, all the action happening behind him. Martin Reader was passed first by Ian Alexander and then by Steve Sawford. Sawford got the kart working well in the latter part of the race and started to press Alexander. Coming out of Hanger with two laps to go, Alexander was slightly slower and Sawford made contact, resulting in Alexander spinning. Reader was able to take advantage by passing both as Sawford resumed in third just ahead of Martin Gadd and Mark Bartholomew. Sawford did his best to recover second place, but Reader held on. Nigel Geraghty was the Novice trophy winner.
