Hi people!

I'm a new guy on this so here goes my issue. I have a 125cc leopard which i really like, but i have to start it with an external starter. Yesterday i found on ebay this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/180789829726?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_500wt_1343

Does this work with my leopard, so i can throw away the infamous starter and really have a touch and go? Smile

Here is a photo of my baby! Smile

Cheers!

No that won't work that's for a KF engine. It definitely will not be compatible with the leopard. Get in contact with Wright or JM Racing. They stock spares for these motors.

Also note that the Leopard on-board starters are notoriously poor and it WILL fail. You'll probably want to get a few of them. We try and start our Leopard on the grid with the external to save the on-board for on-track restarts if I get wrecked or something.

Not sure if the X30 ignition is compatible with the Leopard or not, or if it's any more reliable.

People going on about the reliability on the starter motor, We have two leopards and me mates have them too... They all have the same starter motors as you and haven't had an issue once

The starter motor isn't the issue, it's the actual electronics.

We usually take it apart and re-solder everything to reinforce it right away. Almost everyone I know with a Leopard has the same issues.

I know the keyway for the X30 is a bit different than the Leopard but that might be the only thing.

So installing the x30 electronics will not solve the problem ... so if i find a new battery pack can you tell me how to reinforce it? Very Happy

Greetings!

The reason why Leopard starters fail is due only to vibration. Rotax max/X30/Leopard all use the same starter. The orig. concept of the Leopard was a non-competition 15k rpm recreational engine. In USA all frontrunners turn 2k past that or more. The unbalanced piston plus the weight of the clutch and add the weak factory brushes all contributed to the early death of starters.
Looking at the lineup of TaG at recent races most all left the grid with the assist of an external starter. Why even bother to have the starter on the engine nowadays?
