|
|
Im going to start racing in Junior Rotax, I have done some A&D karting.
I have some questions:
1)How much set up will be required to be competitive at club level?
2)Will I need my dad there at every race to be 'mechanic' becuase he doesnt drive so my mam will take me there and he will be at work for a lot of races.
3)Where do you get the fuel from and how do you mix it?
Thanks in advance. |

1 - A good basic set up will be fine to start with. Getting the best setup won't be your main priority for a while.
2 - Depends how much you can do yourself. If not a lot then you're going to really struggle.
3 - Get the fuel from a petrol station and mix in 2-stroke oil. 50:1 ratio (fuel to oil)
My biggest tip however would be to go down to a raceday without your kart first of all to meet people and see how things are done. If you just turn up on your first day without knowing much and your dad not there then you may find it very difficult. _________________ Proud member of the YUKC! www.yorkunikarting.co.uk |

Depends. You need to keep it lubed, tire pressures checked, make sure all is safe and can pass pre-tech scrutineering, fix any damage that you get on track, spark plug changes potentially... Lots of stuff could need maintenance, especially when you're new and you don't know what you're doing. _________________

You need to go to a race meeting and talk to people. That will be the best way to get all the information you need and will be way easier to figure out your specific situation. _________________

However if you go to a large club then some competitors will say you need to spend at least £500 a day to be competitive, however in reality you can do it for much, much less if you do without luxuries. We do it for roughly £120 a day.
Just didn't want someone to say that to you and scare you _________________ no1 way to take corners "fast in, faster out!"

I've been told that by a couple of drivers dads, I just didn't want the adam to hear this from someone and be put off from karting. So I wanted to stop the myth before it could even start to spread. _________________ no1 way to take corners "fast in, faster out!"

This is a big deterrent for people getting into the sport. Some people want to give the impression theyre minted so when the neighbours ask is it expensive to go karting the answer is "yes terribly", you could never afford it is what he wants you to think.
Nobody is saying its cheap and a pair of football boots and subs every week is a hell of a lot cheaper but you can be thrifty and successful all the same. |

I got all my gear second hand including my kart and its all upto msa standard. My engine is fully rebuilt and sealed by bhss I have everything I need to go racing including spares ect and I have spent in total about £1750 which is £200 less than a friend of mine spend just on his engine (ogden).
It can be an extremely expensive sport. However as said already alot of it is about "looking good" rather than actually just having fun and being competetive.
You dont "need" to have a £600 paint job on your helmet or a brand new sticker kit every race meeting for instance but some people would be imbarrased not to. Thats their problem.
I turn up with my kart in the back of my mates 4x4 and we get along just fine. Last club meeting we did cost me about £100 including a set of one meeting old tyres, fuel, entry fees, fuel to get there and back and a bite to eat during the day.
