hi everyone,

I'm currently studying at university and trying to afford uni and race is almost impossible so i was wondering what would be the best way to make money out of doing rebuilds for people, i know that to be considered you have to have your name on winning engines, but I'm a movie and have a lot more mechanical knowledge, i was a race mechanic running 6 radical sports cars over europe for the past 6 years, and my dad is a mechanical engineer, i rebuild all my own engines and have spent a small fortune on all the tools needed to do this including all the tools needed for honing, not boring just honing, i know someone else asked a few weeks ago about this and most people said about race winning engines is the only way of getting you know but if i was offering a rebuild service that was cheap would people take that over race proven engines, and I'm talking club level not Super1.

if anybody wants a cheap rebuild let me know and we can work out a deal.

what sort of price is a rebuild usually and what exactly do you get for your money ?

cheers
sam

cheers chris,

iv just had a look on grace and they charge £180 for an engine rebuild in clouding parts and labour, i would imagine this would include;

big end bearing
small end bearing
piston ring
crank case bearings

is that correct or would it include anything else? would it be honed and new piston for that price?

he also charges £60 for carb strip/prepare, i would rebuild a carb for £12 including postage. its £6 for a rebuild kit and i would guess it would be £2 postage so i would only be making £4 on each rebuild, I'm not saying that i would rebuild it to a low standard because thats not how i do things, what I'm saying is i would rather rebuild 2-3 carbs at once instead of them being sent in one at a time i would do you a deal the more that are sent in.

I have a industrial parts wash that i use every time i rebuild my engines, that would be used on the carbs as well, the carbs would come back fully rebuilt and set up ready to bolt on and race. the parts wash makes my engines look brand new, i only put the crank cases in there and hand waste the barrel and cylinder, i haven't tried putting a barrel in the wash just incase it takes the black coating off, but I'm looking at buying a F*cked head off a mate to check this.

if anybody is interested in a rebuild please let me know and we can work out price Smile

cheers
sam

just looking round and spell fame offer a rebuild service

TKM BT82 Extreme Full Rebuild (Excluding Connecting Rod)
The full rebuild of the BT82 Extreme includes labour and the following new parts:

- New big end cage
- New crank pin
- New FAG main bearings
- Rebuild crank and adjust to run true
- New crank oil seals
- New piston and ring
- New piston pin
- New piston circlips
- New pulse pipe
- New small end assembly
- Hone barrel
- Pressure test engine
- Fiche legality check
- Ultrasonic Clean

Price: £235.00
(EX VAT at 20%)

Thats copied straight from there website and i can do the same rebuild for £160 including labour and fiche

and then they charge you £120 to fiche the engine i have all the tools to do their for £40

this means i could do a full rebuild including piston for £160 and i can do a engine rebuild and Carb rebuild for £170 as a special offer.

to me thats a cheap engine rebuild, i would also run the engine on a stand briefly to make sure everything is ok.

cheers
sam

Hey Sam, if you can do a rebuild and fiche for £160 I'd like to add myself to your customer list-I'm getting funds sorted for a rebuild at the min and will be looking to get it done in about a month/6wks. Would you be up for that?

My engine certainly needs it, it's done around 15/16hrs now and is nowhere near as sharp as it was. I'm gearing up to drop into the season at Clay for the two-day meet in Sept onwards, so a rebuild has gotta be done before long, I've been putting it off for ages but the poor thing would definitely benefit from some TLC!

The postage would be more than £2. £2 probably wouldn't even get standard 2nd class. You'd probably want special delivery, for the compensation and extra careful handling.

Also if you're talking about an Ultrasonic cleaner, don't put anything anodized in it (like the head or barrel) it takes the anodizing off.

i have had a lot more interest then what i thought i would have, but this is good, keep them emails coming Smile even if you don't want rebuild from me can't hurt taking a look?

i have modified the prices slightly this evening as i made a stupid error on the parts, i basically was charging for an extra gudgeon pin when spell fame do a "Piston Kit" which includes gudgeon and cir clips so whoever has received an email prior to this evening please take off £6 to get a more accurate price, i have also put together a price for juniors and seniors"extreme" and the juniors have an extra piston ring so is slightly more expensive but only by a couple of £ so nothing major.

also i would just like to thank everyone for there comments and good lucks i have received, i have only met a hand full of people off this forum and its nice to know it doesn't matter who you are people are always will to give you a helping hand

regards
sam

Sam,you will also have to take in to account that some may have the new type crank cases that use the larger bearings and seals that cost about £15 inc vat more than the bearings and seals older type crank cases.
