Grab the rear bumper with your left hand and steering wheel with your right hand (very important my kart got away from me and drove into someone else when i held the seat )
Run FAST push the back of the kart down and keep running eventually it will feel like you hardly need to push, jump in and put your foot straight on the throttle about halfway down. Choke if you need to and put your foot flat on off you go! |

| The hard bit is getting on the throttle - I found the trick to this is DO NOT try and get your arse down first, instead jump in and concentrate on getting your right foot easy on the throttle which means landing simultaneously with your left foot on the front lip of your seat, putting your weight on the wheel, then you can just slide into the seat |

Hi Lee,
Search for D/D Heroes, i created a topic on this a little while ago and theres some very good info on there, especially in a likn that i beleive Dee posted.
Personally i stand completely at the back of the kart to start with and then run round to the side once i'm on the move, the kart will tend to veer off to the side when you initially start running when the rear wheels are off the ground but once it hits the floor it'll straighten up usually. Standing at the back allows you to really push down on the kart when it hits the floor. Also your posture is very important, straight back, bum as close to the floor as possible, do thsi by putting one foot forward right under bumper (whichever one feels more natural to you) and the other foot nice and far back, this will allow you to really launch forward with the kart. I start with one hand on the bumper and one on the seat, from memory i go left hand bumper right hand seat, then transfer left hand to seat and right hand to wheel as i run round the side, just in from the right, left foot in the middle of the seat right foot on the throttle, you want your left to hit the seat and your right to hit the throttle at pretty much the same time, as said if you try to sit now first you'll never make the throttle in time.
It's all about finding the way that works for you aswell, for example alot of people jump in from the left, but even though i'm left handed/footed i prefer getting in from the right. Practice is the key as always! |

I've always jumped in from the left, for some reason I just can't do it from the right, I do it exactly how 328isport does it just jump in from the left _________________ #23

I think some of this is to do with your height,im 6ft 2 and the first time i tryed it i ended up kicking the engine and from that day i new it wouldnt work didn feel comfortable so obviously the tall u are the harder it is to get ur legs over the engine were as from the left u dnt have that concern ! |

Haha theres probably some truth in that, however i'm 6ft4 and jump in from the right
I did catch my airbox a few times initially, though i didnt feel it, just noticed black marks on the airbox! The worst one for me was getting my left foot caught in the loop created by the ht lead! That's not so fun as you fall into the kart. safe to say i only did it the once. I have seen people cable tie the lead to the end fin on the head, i might do this soon |

It's not that with me, I'm quite small, I just physically can't jump from the right, I can't seem to support myself with my left hand, it's really weird! _________________ #23

Guys just to add, found something quite interesting on my last test day, i bought a spare carb beforehand and intended on getting it rebuilt before use but as the pop off was good i thought i'd give it a test first, i noticed the throttle butterfly was open more on this carb, my original is open just to the point you can see daylight through it, the spare was probably twice as much.. and what a difference
I'm used to the kart not even hinting of running until my foot hits the pedal, with this carb the kart started almost as soon as it hit the floor, it was pretty much moving at the speed of my sprint, which was disconcerting at first but it definately makes starting easier!! On going to jump in i'm used to the kart loosing momentum as soon as i go to jump in, with the set up on this carb i found i had a lot more time to get my foot on the throttle as the kart was already essentially running albeit slowly. I also needed less space to start due to a shorter run.
Now obviously this isn't ideal especially on a grid with other people/karts, but there must definately be a happy medium, it'll just take time to find it! Though on a quiet test day i don't see the problem in opening the throttle a touch more, the ease of starting is huge and i noticed no shut off issues with the throttle when out on circuit, it deaccelerated to a stop just as it did before.
If you're having differculty in getting enough speed up or not being quick enough catching the throttle whilst solo starting this is one thing to try, though with safety the priority i'd suggest to do this with a pusher initially trying different settings and getting your pusher to give you a push obviously with you're foot off the throttle and see how the kart reacts. also remember a small change will make a noticeable difference..
I think once you have the technique down and the carb set correctly, 100% success rate in solo starts will be comfortably possible. |
