Hi guys n girls. I have been out of the motorsport since i was 11 when i use to race cadet karts. Now im 22 and have my own money to spend, i have decided to start up karting again. I have recently bought a senior formula blue kart from Dave Taylot (DTmotorsports) its a Mike Wilson chassis and seems to be fair good. So....
I decided to take it to Hooton park today to test it out. Baring in mind i havent been back in a proper kart and on the track for a number of years, i managed to get a 38.55, max rpm was 15973 and was running at 71 degress.
A few thing i noticed were;
- the back end seemed to be coming out too much (on pre warn tyres that i dont know the history of)
- engine seemed to be peaking full speed at around half way down the straight meaning the gearing must of been slightly out. (i was using an 80 on the axle sprocket, dont know what is on the clutch tho!)
i Just wanted to know if anybody has any knowledge of what gear ratio works well at hooton park also what could be causing the rear to come out? hopefully i should be able to shave a bit of time off when i have these things sorted and got back into the sport again and learnt the track.
I must say i thoroughly enjoyed myself tho and i hope the grids will be ok next year as ive heard formula blue has dropped off a little towards end of the year.
Dave. |

Hi Dave,
Just read your other post on the general page and, yes, this part of the forum is a bit quiet. Hopefully its not indicative of the class's popularity.
I also took my kart for its first test at Hooton last month. Not as successful as yours though. Engine died after only a handful of laps with what i now suspect is an electrical issue.
Sprocket-wise, 80-76 was the recommended range i was given. Although, i ended up going with 69 because i don't yet have a tacho and i want to keep the revs down until i do. I think the regulations stipulate a 10 tooth driving sprocket.
Know what you mean about the rear tyres. No idea how old the slicks on mine are. They've still got a little tread depth on them but i think they've seen the best of their days. I didn't really have long enough to get the kart thoroughly warmed up so that probably explains the digital braking experience.
I'm still a complete novice and could be way off, but my general impression is that the north west club racing is looking okay, not big grids but enough to warrant running the races at least. The NKRA rounds seem quite popular though. Obviously, bigger grids are healthier for the class, but at least i won't be as far from the front! Anyway, we know that there should be +2 on the numbers with you and me; and i'm sure i've seen a few FBlue enquiries on here since i joined up, so there's certainly some interest.
Also, "snap" on being in Preston.

what restrictor you running?
im sure it may be carb settings if its peaking too early as the engines will rev on much higher than that. On the odd occasion i go racing im pulling around 16.5 to 16.9k revs. _________________ www.martynlyell.co.uk

| ye i am goin to take the restrictor out. I think there is a red one in at the mo and im heavier than that band. it was only my first session so lots of things to try yet. Apparently ive heard anything over 16200 revs and the power is useless? dave. |

Yea its coming out the power band at that stage but ive noticed with alot of different blue engines it hits a "2nd stage" at high revs and gives a sweet top end given the correct carb setup. Also if you have a nice carb setup and its pulling ok at top end your also gaining the advantage of the extra acceleration at bottom end revs. _________________ www.martynlyell.co.uk

thanks for the reply, re built my carb this week ready for the non msa race event at hooton park today. Seem to accelerate so much smoother and no problem with hitting high revs no'bogging' down so i was pleased with that seems the carb kit has done the trick! also it didnt have a restrictor in when i looked closer lol. |

| the top part of the carb is the fuel pump so the fresher the kit the better the fuel pump that prob what your noticeing . when i did blue we reved over 17 quite often so the carb was kitted quite often gets expensive!! |
