It's actually based on their LMP2 car from a couple of years back. The chassis is pure race car and the bodywork is just draped over the top! Unfortunately the engine wasn't that competitive, so they've returned to a normal 4cyl turbo based on the unit that's in the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 MPS.
Since you mention the 787B though....
